It’s The Biggest Decision, You’re About To Get Right (Hopefully)

“We can’t give our two cents of how tall we want to be.
We don’t get an opinion on our ethnicity.
But the one we spend our life with, that we get to choose.
And I choose, I choose you.”

Okay Andy Grammer, I get that you’re excited about whoever you are dating and/or are engaged to. But, did you know that the choice of you who would marry did not really become widely accepted as a decision the people that were going to be married got to make until rather recently (historically speaking)? It wasn’t until about the 18th century that it was “in the rules” that couples should have a companionate marriage. A man could begin to marry a woman he found interesting and an educated woman could marry a man above her status. Happiness became an important part of marriage.

So thanks Enlightenment thinkers, for realizing that people should be allowed to be happy in their marriage. And thanks Andy, for being excited that we can make the decision of who to marry on our own, and hopefully get it right.
